Blindspots: My top 5 leadership weaknesses.
Top 5 Leadership Weaknesses
And what to try instead…
1. Trying to Do Too Much
Lie: I can do it all without paying the price.
Energy and time are finite resources.
Every yes is a no, and every no a yes.
Try: Ruthlessly reserving your “yes” for the wildly important.
2. Trying to Do It All Now
Lie: It all has to be done by the next major deadline.
Neglect today what can wait until tomorrow,
so you can do today what matters most for tomorrow.
Try: “Planned neglect.”
3. Trying to Do It by Myself
Lie: I’m the best one to do this.
My first thought was instinctively: How will I do this?
With training, I’ve rearranged the first three letters to: Who will do this?
Try: Rearranging three letters [H-O-W] to [W-H-O].
4. Trying to Add Without Subtracting
Lie: I can keep adding without consequences.
Guitar amps don’t actually go to 11.
If you want something to stand out,
you can either turn it up or turn everything else down.
Try: Lowering competing noise.
5. Trying to Plan Without Perspective
Lie: I can see all sides of the problem.
The world is round—and your problems are too.
In a sphere, the most you can see from any given point is 50%.
Try: Ask others who can see what you can’t before you act.
I pray these leadership lies don’t keep you from your greatest impact.
